September, 14th 2024 /// Generating community process through participatory design

It was a great experience facilitating a workshop at the Design as Activism Symposium. Thanks to Jessica Meharry for the invitation to the Institute of Design (ID) at Illinois Tech, and thanks to the team that connected all of these wonderful people and experiences. During the workshop that I facilitated, participants generated a story map about a one day journey through the city of Chicago. Reflecting about their own experiences opened a conversation about how they perceived the different neighborhoods that they passed through and the aspirations, concerns and obstacles that they identified on their route. This exercise has the objective of identifying a generative theme (Freire, 1979), which is a key element for guiding the content of a participatory design program.

September, 10th 2024 /// Design Social Change book review

I am excited to share a book review I wrote for Leslie Ann Noel´s book Design Social Change, published by Design and Culture The Journal of the Design Studies Forum.
Reading the Design Social Change book, I took a moment to deeply understand Noel’s approach to promoting social change. Following the writing prompts proposed by the author allowed me to reflect on my position as a woman, mother, designer, and Ecuadorian-Latino immigrant in the United States. I visualize the challenges I face as an individual and imagine/design the possible steps to build networks around the social changes that I am looking for. I am glad I found this book in my journey.
